Zero counting is part of the calibration procedure. There is a zero counting challenge in the Lasair III validation manual that is more stringent than the JIS standard. The validation manual allows for no more than 1 particle in a 2 minute period, where the JIS standard specifies 1 particle in a 5 minute period. As we have no control over the room in which they perform this test, we must assume that we are trying to challenge the ability of the particle counter to zero count and verify that no contamination exists within the optical chamber.
