June 7, 2006 -- /IEST/ -- ROLLING MEADOWS, IL -- The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) recognized the technical achievements of its members and supporters at the annual awards recognition and annual membership meeting during ESTECH 2006, the 52nd annual technical meeting and exposition of IEST.
Charles W. Berndt was named a Fellow of IEST. He received this honor for his unique technical knowledge, professional skills, and distinct contributions to advancing the environmental sciences through publications, innovation, and untiring service to IEST.
This year, a special award was given by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO). Richard Matthews was presented this award for his leadership of ISO Technical Committee (TC) 209, Cleanroom and Associated Controlled Environments. He was also awarded the Monroe Seligman Award for his 12 years of leadership in ISO/TC 209 as Chairman, his dedicated service to IEST, and his leadership in the contamination control industry.
Each year, The President selects the recipient of the President's Award. This award was given to Michael Roy for his long-term service to IEST, both in the Chesapeake Chapter and at the national level.
Many awards were presented to individuals in the contamination control industry. The first award recognized individuals who have demonstrated professional distinction and leadership, dedication, hard work, innovative abilities by participation in Working Group activities, and contributions to the development of Recommended Practices in the field of Contamination Control. The Robert L. Mielke Award was presented to Robert Peck for founding the IEST Contamination Control Standards and Practices program. The second award was in memory of Al Lieberman, IEST Fellow. R. Vijayakumar was presented the Al Lieberman Award for his productive participation, his positive example, and his encouragement of those he teaches. The third award in the contamination control industry went to Mark Hallworth for the James R. Mildon Award. He was given this award for his published papers on contamination monitoring and control; his support of PDA and ISPE; and his advancement of the knowledge of pharmaceutical aseptic monitoring techniques.
In the industries related to design, test, and evaluation/product reliability, a number of awards were given. The Reliability Test and Evaluation Award was presented to Jon Wilson for his long-term contributions to IEST and its members in the fields of reliability and evaluation. John Lindberg was presented the Dave S. Steinberg Award for his contributions in identifying problems and posing solutions in many commercial products and military equipment. Another award given was the Climatics Award. This was presented to David Gibbons for his efforts in educating new climatic test personnel in the techniques necessary to maximize the benefit of climatic testing; and to understand the theory of operations and safety aspects to test equipment, test articles, and personnel during the performance of climatic testing. Lastly, the Irwin Vigness Award was presented for contributions to the fields of shock and vibration through published papers, studies, and reports. David Smallwood was given this award for his shock analysis techniques over the last 30 years.
This year, a paper in the Design, Test, and Evaluation division won the Maurice Simpson Technical Editors Award. Thomas J. Stadterman and Donald B. Barker were presented this award for their paper, "Practical Assessment of Electronic Circuit Cards under Mechanical Shock Loading."
For the field of Space Simulation, an award was given for contributions to the field of spacecraft testing, in particular for the editing and preparing scores of technical papers for publishing in the Proceedings of the Space Simulation Conferences. Joseph L. Stecher III was presented with the John D. Campbell Space Simulation Award.
In recognition for her continuous, insightful participation and contributions to several IEST working groups and her positive attitude to challenges posed in the working groups, Angela DeHaan of Nelson Laboratories was presented the John Martin Outstanding Younger Member Award.
The Fred Hermann Memorial Award provides recognition to members whose services have been primarily in chapter activities. John T. Ach was honored with this award for his long and faithful service to the Greater Ohio Chapter as its treasurer.
The IEST Chapter awards were presented to the Upstate New York Chapter for Outstanding Chapter Communications and to the Chicago Chapter for being the Outstanding Chapter.
